Minor Surgery Costs: Stitches, Cysts, Mucoceles and the Setting That Sets the Price

7 min readUpdated August 2026Typical 2026 ranges, not quotes
Bottom line

The small procedures people search most, cyst removal, mucocele excision, stitches, ganglion removal, mole and lipoma excision, cost $300 to $3,500 in the US depending on where they are done: a primary-care or dermatology office is the cheapest, an urgent care the middle, an emergency department by far the most expensive. Stitches for a simple laceration run $300 to $800 at urgent care and $1,500 to $4,000 in an ER once the facility fee is added. None of these are worth traveling for, but the office-versus-ER choice can be a 5x difference.

This page exists because "how much does it cost to get stitches" and "cyst removal price" are among the most common surgery-cost searches, and the answer is almost entirely about the setting. The procedures are simple; the bills are not.

Office and urgent-care figures include the procedure and a basic visit; pathology adds $100 to $300 if tissue is sent. ER figures include a facility fee (level 2 to 4, $250 to $1,500 alone) plus physician fee. Colombia: the same procedures run $60 to $400 at private clinics, but nobody travels for them. The setting is the price

Every emergency department visit carries a facility fee tiered by the complexity of the visit, billed on top of the physician's charge and any supplies. For a laceration, that facility fee is usually the largest line. Urgent-care centers charge a flat visit fee plus a procedure fee and can suture most simple wounds; a dermatologist, primary-care physician, or general surgeon's office can excise cysts, lipomas, and moles under local anesthesia for a fraction of an ambulatory-center price. Go to the ER for deep wounds, bleeding that will not stop, facial lacerations you want a plastic surgeon to close, animal bites, or anything involving tendons, nerves, or joints; go to urgent care for the rest.

Cysts: what you are paying for

Epidermoid (sebaceous) cysts and pilar cysts are removed under local anesthesia in 15 to 30 minutes by excising the sac intact, which prevents recurrence; draining alone is cheaper but the cyst returns. If the cyst is inflamed or infected it is usually drained first and excised weeks later, which means two visits and two bills. Insurance typically covers removal when a cyst is painful, infected, or growing, and treats it as cosmetic otherwise. Pathology on the removed tissue is standard and adds $100 to $300.

Mucoceles, ganglions, lipomas

A mucocele is a blocked salivary gland cyst, usually on the lower lip; many resolve on their own, and excision by an oral surgeon or ENT runs $400 to $1,500. A ganglion cyst on the wrist can be aspirated in the office ($150 to $400) with a high recurrence rate, or excised at an ambulatory center under regional anesthesia ($1,500 to $3,500) with a lower one. Lipomas are removed for size, discomfort, or cosmetics; larger or deep lipomas move from the office to an ambulatory center and the price triples.

How to pay less

Why Colombia keeps appearing in these tables. The World Health Organization's 2000 World Health Report ranked Colombia's health system #22 in the world and #1 in the Western Hemisphere, ahead of the United States and Canada. That report has not been repeated, so for current verification pair it with two live anchors: JCI accreditation (a hospital-level credential; standalone clinics are not JCI-accredited) and ReTHUS, Colombia's national health-professional registry at rethus.gov.co, where any surgeon's license can be checked.

Frequently Asked

How much does it cost to get stitches?

$300 to $800 at urgent care and $1,500 to $4,000 in an emergency department for a simple laceration, self-pay. The difference is the ER facility fee.

How much does it cost to get stitches removed?

$75 to $200 at the office or urgent care that placed them; often free if removed at the same practice. Many wound clinics will remove stitches placed elsewhere for a nominal visit fee.

How much does cyst removal cost with insurance?

Usually a copay or coinsurance if the cyst is symptomatic (pain, infection, growth). Purely cosmetic removal is often excluded and billed at the self-pay price of $300 to $1,200 in-office.

How much does mucocele removal cost?

$400 to $1,500 at an oral surgeon or ENT office, self-pay. Many mucoceles resolve without treatment within a few weeks.

Is cyst or lipoma removal worth doing abroad?

No. The procedure costs less than the flight. The exception is if you are already in Colombia for another procedure, where an in-clinic excision runs $60 to $400.
