Height Surgery Cost: Limb Lengthening, Height Reduction, Rib and Clavicle Surgery

Bottom line

Cosmetic limb lengthening in the US typically costs $75,000 to $150,000 for both femurs or both tibias with internal magnetic nails, gaining 5 to 8 cm over a year of daily lengthening and rehabilitation. In Colombia the same procedure at a specialized orthopedic center typically runs $30,000 to $55,000. Height reduction surgery, shortening the femurs, is performed by only a handful of surgeons worldwide, costs $60,000 to $100,000 or more, and is generally not recommended for cosmetic purposes. Rib removal and clavicle reduction, the other "proportion" procedures, are covered below.

Height surgery searches have grown quickly and the information available is thin and often promotional. This guide gives typical 2026 pricing for limb lengthening, height reduction, rib removal, and clavicle reduction, and is direct about risk, because these are among the most invasive elective procedures a healthy person can choose.

Read this before the price tables. Limb lengthening is major orthopedic surgery on healthy bone. Typical complication rates in published cosmetic series run 20 to 30 percent, including joint stiffness, muscle contracture, nerve injury, delayed or non-union, infection, and nail breakage; a small fraction of patients end up with permanent functional loss. Height reduction carries the same risks plus a proportional loss of leg length that most surgeons consider unjustifiable for a cosmetic goal. Nothing on this page is a recommendation to have either procedure.

US figures reflect the small number of dedicated cosmetic lengthening centers; the internal magnetic nails themselves cost $10,000 to $20,000 per pair. Colombia figures are for specialized orthopedic limb-reconstruction centers, moderate confidence. Height reduction and cosmetic clavicle reduction are performed by very few surgeons anywhere; treat any quote with caution.

What the lengthening price includes and what it does not

A typical all-in quote covers the osteotomy surgery, the nails, 2 to 4 hospital nights, the external remote controller, and follow-up X-rays during the distraction phase. It usually does not cover the 6 to 12 months of physical therapy (3 to 5 sessions per week is standard, $100 to $200 per session in the US), accommodation near the center during the 2 to 3 month distraction phase if you are not local, mobility aids, or the nail-removal surgery 12 to 18 months later. Realistic total cost of ownership in the US is often $100,000 to $200,000 for a femoral lengthening once therapy and time off work are counted.

How limb lengthening works, in brief

The bone is cut and a telescoping nail is inserted inside it. Starting about a week after surgery, an external magnet drives the nail to lengthen roughly 0.75 to 1 mm per day. New bone forms in the gap. Distraction takes 2 to 3 months for 6 to 8 cm; consolidation (hardening) takes another 3 to 6 months before full weight-bearing without aids. Muscles, tendons, nerves, and vessels are stretched along with the bone, which is the source of most complications and of the daily therapy requirement. Femur lengthening is generally better tolerated than tibia; going beyond 8 cm on a single segment sharply increases complication rates.

Height reduction

Cosmetic height reduction means removing a segment of each femur and fixing the ends with a nail, shortening the legs by 3 to 5 cm. It is offered by a very small number of surgeons, mostly for patients with disproportionately long legs or a strong psychological motivation. The procedure permanently weakens the thigh muscles relative to their new length, carries all the risks of lengthening without the biology working in your favor, and is not endorsed by orthopedic societies for cosmetic indications. We list a price range because the searches exist; we do not route quote requests for it.

Rib removal and clavicle reduction

Rib removal (typically the floating 11th and 12th ribs, sometimes the 10th) narrows the waist and is performed by some plastic surgeons; it is real surgery with pneumothorax and nerve risk but is far less invasive than limb surgery. Cosmetic clavicle reduction shortens the collarbones to narrow the shoulders; it is a bilateral osteotomy with plates, offered by a handful of surgeons, and again we list it without routing.

Traveling for limb lengthening

Lengthening is the one procedure on this page where a Colombian specialized center is a serious option, because the distraction phase requires staying near the surgeon for 2 to 3 months anyway; Medellín's cost of living makes a long stay cheaper than in a US city. Non-negotiables: an orthopedic surgeon with a limb-reconstruction fellowship and a published series of cosmetic cases, a hospital-based program, a physical therapy plan for the full distraction phase, and a written agreement on who manages complications after you go home. Credentials to verify before booking in Colombia. Surgeon license on ReTHUS, the national health-professional registry; specialty board membership (SCCOT for orthopedics and traumatology, ACC for general surgery, SCCP for plastic surgery); and the name of the hospital where the procedure is performed. JCI accreditation applies to hospitals, never to standalone clinics.

Why Colombia keeps appearing in these tables. The World Health Organization's 2000 World Health Report ranked Colombia's health system #22 in the world and #1 in the Western Hemisphere, ahead of the United States and Canada. That report has not been repeated, so for current verification pair it with two live anchors: JCI accreditation (a hospital-level credential; standalone clinics are not JCI-accredited) and ReTHUS, Colombia's national health-professional registry at rethus.gov.co, where any surgeon's license can be checked.

Frequently Asked

How much does height surgery cost?

Cosmetic limb lengthening typically costs $75,000 to $150,000 in the US and $30,000 to $55,000 in Colombia for both femurs or both tibias, before physical therapy, long-stay accommodation, and nail removal.

How much does height reduction surgery cost?

$60,000 to $100,000 or more at the very few centers that perform it. It is not generally recommended for cosmetic purposes and we do not route quote requests for it.

How much height can you gain?

5 to 8 cm per segment is the usual safe range; femur then tibia in staged surgeries can total 12 to 15 cm over two years, with rising complication risk at the upper end.

How much does rib removal cost?

$8,000 to $15,000 in the US and $4,000 to $7,500 in Colombia for removal of the floating ribs to narrow the waist.

Is limb lengthening safe?

It is major elective surgery with published cosmetic-series complication rates around 20 to 30 percent, most manageable, some permanent. Surgeon experience, staying within 6 to 8 cm per segment, and disciplined physical therapy are the main risk reducers.

How long is recovery?

2 to 3 months of daily distraction and therapy, 3 to 6 further months to full weight-bearing, and 12 to 18 months to nail removal. Athletic performance typically returns over 12 to 24 months.
